O.K.I. 16 year Buff Turkey battle

O.K.I. 16 year Buff Turkey battle

DFW Whiskey Club vs Dallas Bourbon Club

You already know about these incredible Buffalo Trace/Wild turkey 15-16 year old bottles. Each is a gem all on their own. This is an epic battle of heavy hitters.

DFW Whiskey club was one of the first in the area and has a reputation for making killer picks, while Dallas Bourbon Club is widely known as an incredible charitable organization with wise members who truly love the community.

That being said, it's time to do a proper fisticuffs if ya know what I mean. Let's gooooo!!!!

I will do a blind tasting and later be revealed which glass contained which pour. The pours will be labeled A and B.

Sample A:

N: Toasted vanilla, cinnamon, marshmallow, cola, mild ethanol, and hints of tropical and stone fruit. Smells like it's refined and sophisticated but doesn't mind a wild night out.

Everything about it is classy yet approachable.

(9)

P: Soft marshmallow. Super glue and spray paint, chewy, vibrant, and oaky.

(10)

F: Oh my, what a twist! It's hard to describe how different the finish is from the palate. It's like a different scene in a movie. The color changed. I will say that it was unexpected but welcomed. You immediately get a candy sweetness. Powdered sugar comes to mind, along with nougat. Then, caramelized sugar gives way to watermelon and coffee. Ends with a bunch of bitter chalky oak tannins. What a ride!

(9)

O: Weehaw. This is incredible. It's one of the most interesting bourbons I've had in a while. This is what they're all meant to be but only a few are able to actualize. Fantastic bottle.

Sample B:

N: Slightly more acidic and lighter right away. It's the lighter fluid if you will. Jkjk. Let's get into it. It's slightly floral. In the middle it's full of bright fruit. Green apples come to mind. As I dive deeper in, it harkens it's inner herbal character. Tarragon and dill. As you break through that layer, you are surprised with red fruit notes and baked confectionary. It's Cherry pie with a charred top crust and vanilla. It's very pleasant and evolving; with seemingly no end.

(10)

P: Apples, apple skin, pears, and honeydew rind.

(9)

F: Explosion of red fruit and vanilla followed by ethanol burn and new car smell. The finish is long and pleasant. It's just a little monotone compared to the roller coaster of a nose. As I write this, it's still going and now I'm picking up hints of mint and melon. There is a faint oak tannin chalkiness that finishes it out.

O: This was quite pleasant. Not a single note one could object to. My only criticism was that it was not boring but comparatively more boring on the finish than the nose. Looking back at my notes, this whiskey comes across as a little bit, "all over the place", but 16 years in a barrel has a way of bringing things together.

It's pretty clear by now that there are no losers in these 15-16 year BuffTurkey bottles. Both contenders gave it their all but there can only be one victor. It's time for the dramatic reveal as I find out which is which.

Drum roll please....

A: DFW Whiskey Club

B: Dallas Bourbon Club
