Blind tasting of mystery samples with reveal at the bottom.
Long overdue mystery sample review.
Huge thanks to Jacob Chen for providing this experience. I've already decided that the one in the GOLD Glen is the best.So here we go.
Sample A RED
N: Citrus, striped orange apple, toffee, and strawberry candy. Well balanced and not overly aggressive.
B: Candied mandarins, baked pecan cherry pie. medium bodied
F: Dry finish that's peachy and ends with some vapors of white grape.
I like this a lot even though I'm generally not a fan of a dry/mineral finish.
Probably around 100proof
Could be an OWA pick or maybe Smoke Wagon.
Score 85
Sample B BLACK
N: Noticeably tart in the middle. Nail polish, watermelon, cantaloupe, and rose petal and I swear there's a smell in there that encroaches on pickle juice. It works though. Overall a pleasant and evolving smell experience but I can already tell, this one's going to be light.
B: Much lighter than RED. Almost no mouth feel on this one. I get some lighter and brighter notes. Some grassy. Pineapple, lemon, lemongrass.
F: Short and somewhat underwhelming. It's like a chalky tunnel with cherry syrup flowing through the middle until it fades away. Pleasant but very straight forward. Maybe one twist.
I'd say this is around 90proof-100proof
This could also be an OWA or possibly a rye maybe willet or pinhook.
Score 80
Sample C GOLD
N: At first I get a faint hint of ethanol and nothing else. I suppose what I mean is that I have to get really close to get anything and it's nail polish remover and everything else is swimming underneath, where I can't get to it. I will try. There are some baked sweet bread type smells, cherries and peaches,
B: Medium body. Industrial adhesive. Heavy oak, brown sugar.
F: Also a little dry (at this point, maybe I've ruined my palate). Very woody and lots of char on the finish. Long lasting and manly. Lol
That was also pretty good.
I would guess it's a woodford or old forester pick at around 110-120proof
Score 85
I would say it's a tie but as far as what I want in my glass, it's RED
Hopefully Jacob will remember what he gave me.
Thanks for hearing me ramble.
Jacob's reveal.
EHT samples, A was smb B and C were different single barrels
Thank you Jacob Chen for providing the samples. This was a very revealing experiment.
